Stainless Steel Water Bottle Care Instructions

Your stainless steel water bottle asks for very little. Rinse it before the first sip. Dry the seal recess after washing. Screw the cap down fully before you pack it.

Before the first use

Rinse it once with warm water, with the seal taken out of the cap.

1. Unscrew the cap and take the seal out. The seal sits in a recess on the underside of the cap and lifts out with a fingernail.
2. Rinse the bottle with warm water. Use the natural bristle brush that came with it. It reaches the bottom, a sponge does not.
3. Dry the cap and the seal recess. A dry recess is what makes the seal hold. Wet, it can sit crooked without you noticing.
4. Press the seal back in and screw the cap down. Screw it down fully once, then open it again. That tells you the thread runs clean.

Cleaning it in the dishwasher

Bottle and cap both go in the dishwasher. Unscrew the cap first.

1. Unscrew the cap. Bottle and cap go in separately. A capped bottle traps water and comes out unwashed inside.
2. Load the bottle upside down. On the top rack if it fits. Water has to run out, not collect.
3. Take the seal out once a week. It can stay in for a normal wash. Weekly, take it out so the recess dries fully.

Sterilizing it in boiling water

Three to five minutes in boiling water, with the cap off.

1. Unscrew the cap. The bottle body goes in the water. The seal can go in loose alongside it.
2. Boil for 3 to 5 minutes. That is enough. Longer does nothing extra.
3. Lift it out and dry the cap and recess. Then let the bottle stand open until it is dry inside.

Before you pack it

Screw the cap all the way down and check the seal sits flat.

1. Check the seal sits flat. Look into the cap. The seal should lie even all the way round, with no lifted edge.
2. Screw the cap down all the way. Hand tight, until it stops. Half a turn short is where a wet backpack comes from.
3. Clip the carabiner through the loop. Then the bottle rides on the outside of the pack and the inside stays dry either way.

Getting the full 25 hours

The bottle holds cold for 25 hours and hot for 13, with no preheating.

1. Fill it right to the top. Air in the bottle is what carries the temperature away. Less air, longer hold.
2. Close it and leave it closed. Every opening costs you. That is the whole trick, and there is no second one.
3. Sparkling drinks are fine. The cap and seal hold carbonation. Open it slowly if it has been shaken.

Washing the cotton pouch

Hand wash only, in warm water at around 86 °F.

1. Hand wash in warm water. Around 86 °F. Hotter water shrinks the cotton.
2. Air dry it. No dryer, no radiator.

A stiff seal means you buy a seal, not a new bottle. Every wearing part on this bottle is sold on its own.

Questions we get asked

Is the stainless steel water bottle dishwasher safe?

Yes. The bottle and the cap both go in the dishwasher, at any temperature your machine runs. Unscrew the cap and load it separately, and stand the bottle upside down so water runs out.

How long does it keep drinks cold?

25 hours cold and 13 hours hot, with no preheating needed. Fill it to the top and keep it closed, and you will see the full figure.

Can I put sparkling water in it?

Yes. The thread and the seal hold carbonation, so it stays sealed and it stays fizzy. If the bottle has been shaken, open the cap slowly.

There is a smell or a taste. What now?

Uncoated steel does not hold flavors, so it is almost always the seal. Take it out, boil it for three minutes, dry it and press it back in. If it stays, the seal set is a few dollars.

Can it go in the freezer?

No. Water expands as it freezes, and there is nowhere for it to go inside a vacuum wall. Chill your drink first and then fill the bottle.

Is it lead-free?
