Our story
Two friends, one problem, and the last lunch box you'll ever need
Blockhütte was started in 2019 by two friends who couldn't find a lunch box worth keeping. So they built one. Nils and Malte still run it themselves from Hamburg, Germany, with no outside investors.
How it started
We met in preschool and never lost touch. Malte went into sales, Nils into automotive manufacturing. Both of us spent years on the road, eating whatever was quickest. It showed.
Cooking your own food and taking it with you was the obvious fix. Finding something to carry it in was not. Everything we found was plastic, or it gave out after a few months. So we built our own, in Nils's parents' garage in Paderborn, Germany.
If we had this problem, we thought, other people did too. Blockhütte moved to Hamburg in 2022, and Paderborn is still where it started.
Why we build this way
The throwaway industry makes its money when things end up in the trash. We make ours when nothing does.
A lunch box shouldn't need to be replaced after two years. So we build in steel, and we keep plastic out of everything your food touches. Every part that wears out is sold separately. When a seal fails, you buy a seal. Not a new box.
Built to last. Blockhütte is German for log cabin: a place you build once, properly.
How we prove it
- Material. 304 (18/8) stainless steel, uncoated inside, so your food touches nothing but steel.
- Testing. DEKRA, a German testing and certification organization, checks it every year. They test for food safety and for lead. Every report is on our certificates page, free to download, including the FDA, CPSIA and Washington State reports.
- Spare parts. Lids, seals, dividers, locking bars, and plugs are all sold separately.
- Warranty. Every product comes with a three-year limited warranty. The full terms are on our warranty page.
Meet Nils
Numbers, inventory planning, and everything that keeps the store running, so what you order is actually in stock.
Nils came out of production in the automotive industry. The part of Blockhütte you never see is his.
Meet Malte
The product: sourcing, development, quality, and design. All of that happens in Hamburg. Manufacturing happens in China, to our own designs and specifications.
He came from sales. He works on the details you only notice years later. If a seal doesn't seal, that's Malte's problem.
Where we want to go
We want the sustainable choice to be the easy one. Products reliable enough to keep, and parts that let you keep them.
Email us if the site hasn't answered your question. We'd rather hear it than have you guess.
