Frequently asked questions

How long does an insulated food jar keep food hot?

About 14 hours hot and 19 hours cold, with no preheating. Preheating adds hours on top, and it takes two minutes. Fill the empty jar with boiling water, wait, pour it out. Then add the hot food.

How do I keep lunch warm without a microwave?

A vacuum insulated food jar is the answer. Food packed hot at 7 a.m. is still hot at lunch. The vacuum between the two steel walls stops heat from conducting outward. No microwave, no power, no reheating.

What is the anti-vacuum plug for?

Pack a jar with hot food and it cools. The air inside contracts and can seal the lid shut. The small stopper in the lid lets that pressure equalize, so the jar still opens easily hours later. If your lid has become hard to open, that plug is usually missing or misseated.

Can I put the food jar in the microwave or dishwasher?

Dishwasher yes, microwave no. Jar, lid and seal all go in the dishwasher. Stainless steel sparks in a microwave, which is a property of the material rather than a fault.

Is the outer lid plastic?

Yes, and on purpose: it has to grip when your hands are cold and survive being dropped. Everything your food touches inside the jar is uncoated 18/8 stainless steel.

Can I carry soup in it?

Yes, for everyday food. The screw cap seals against a silicone gasket and is tested with liquids. Thick soups, stews and chili travel fine on their side. Clear soup travels upright.

What can I actually put in it?

Soup, stew, chili, curry, rice bowls, pasta, overnight oats, yogurt and baby food. In summer it works the other way round: cold noodle salads, smoothies, yogurt. The 19-hour cold hold is the part most people forget it has.

Does food taste of metal or of the previous meal?

No. The interior is uncoated 18/8 stainless steel, non-reactive and non-porous. It does not absorb flavor or odor the way plastic does. Curry on Monday does not turn up in the oats on Tuesday.

What is the difference between a food jar and a food thermos?

Just the name. Both mean a vacuum-insulated steel container. Ours keeps meals hot for 14 hours, cold for 19, no preheating. Rinse it hot, fill it to the top, keep it closed. That is what holds the 14 hours.

What size food jar should I get?

18 oz fits a soup portion. 24 oz holds a full lunch. 34 oz covers two servings or a long shift.
